Homemade Murphy Bed – Could You Build One?

Building your own  Murphy or Wall bed is not that difficult. Partiuclarly as modern designs tend not to hide behind closing doors in the way the original 1920′s Murphy beds did.  So if you have average wood working skills and some basic power tools I don’t see why you shouldn’t give making your own wall bed a go.

The first thing you are going to need is a plan on how to build the bed which should detail the amount of wood that you will need and other hardware. . Unless you are very experienced that is! If you are unsure of your abilities maybe consider trying to build a smaller bed first – a wall bed for a child or a single – will be a lot easier to build than a full-sized king or queen-sized Murphy bed.

Saving Money By Building a Murphy Bed

The key to a robust and safe wall bed is a good folding mechanism – a mechamism which doesn’t allow the bed to drop easily from the wall, or worse, doesn’t keep the bed level once its down, is going to ruin  your bed – so prioristize you spending on a good quality mechanism with a decent length warranty.

The wood or veneer is much less important to the functionality of the bed. Consider that if you are going to pain the bed anyway – does the quality of the wood matter. Instead of going for an expensive option for the joinery consider getting wood that is easier to work.

If you are building a bed in a rental apartment do please check with your landlord first that you are allowed to attach the bed to the wall! You will probably have to make good any damage you do to the condo when your lease expires too.

Building a Murphy Bed

One of the neatest accomplishments of mine recently was building a Murphy bed – a wall  bed. Do you want to know what was so great about it? Well, because of the Murphy bed hardware kit, I was able to create a custom bed, and get the most from my work and living space. This really got me thinking, so I have come up with other cool ideas on how a homemade Murphy bed can compliment your space.

The first notion applies to the working profession who commutes to the city from the suburbs. Professionals such as doctors, lawyers and executives, many times need to be on-call, so a fold away bed could be just the perfect idea for them. Think about how it is when you need to work very late into the night, however, you need to be at work bright and early the next morning. An alternative to driving home, tired and exhausted, and risk falling asleep, is pulling out the hide-away, and in seconds, falling fast asleep. With the cabinets in the office as a back drop, nobody would even suspect that the office is doubling as a hotel room.

Efficiency apartments come next. You are familiar with them, right? They usually have one room, with the bathroom and kitchen attached. Lots of studio apartment dwellers choose to have only a bed, or maybe a loft style bed that provides a bit more space. Thy Murphy bed, on the other hand is built in such a way that can incorporate a couch into the design and when you put it away, the room still appears like a living room. This is not only a cool way that maximizes space, but it can also keep your that new girlfriend guessing just how big of a place you really have.

I hope these ideas gave you some insight of just how much versatility a Murphy bed hardware kit is at designing your room. It will not only save you money, but you will also get the option to customize it to your heart is content. You will be surprised at what a cool addition this will be to your living area.
