My local authority is trying to encourage people to cycle to work – rather than bring their cars into town. This is more than a little silly in a city which is built on more hills than Rome and a where a windy day will top 100km/hr! Oh and the roads are narrow and there are hardly any dedicated cycle lanes. And its all so uncesseary.

For much of the last year or so I have commuted by motor scooter. Why a scooter not a motorbike? Quite simple – I don’t like having to wear trousers – and also I like to be able to carry a bit of shopping.  Scooters are also a more comfortable riding position if you don’t have great upper body strength.

The reality is that a scooter costs little more than a good road bike – but you get to actually arrive at your destination in one piece and you don’t have to do a complete change when you arrive!
