Black Mold Can Be Prevented

Black mold can form in your home any place where there is moisture such as the bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen and/or under sinks. Black mold growth can occur outside your home as well. The best treatment for black mold is prevention. If you live in an area where there is high humidity such as the high desert with cold, damp winters; near the ocean, a lake, or river, then your home is at risk for black mold and other types of fungi.

One way to help prevent mold growth is to control the humidity level inside the home. This can be done by using humidity sensors and/or dehumidifiers. Some people say that the best way to prevent mold growth inside a home is to control the moisture within the home. Other methods such as a mold control primer paint base is effective for walls, cabinets, water heater closets and under sinks. A product called Kilz is a great product and can be found at most discount stores, hardware stores, and paint supply stores. Kilz prevents the growth of mold and odors caused by moisture. It also prevents cracking and peeling of the top coat due to weather extremes.

Mold can be successfully treated, but it is expensive once it sets in and some home insurance providers do not have mold coverage. Black mold can cause serious health problems to some people, including the breakdown of the immune system and/or certain neurological damage. Mold prevention is well worth the expense because it will save money in the long run, protect your health and protect the value of the home.

One good way to prevent mold from setting in is to repair water leaks as soon as possible. Repair leaky faucets, hot water heater leaks and keep the air conditioner in good working order. It is a good idea to use the Kilz primer inside the hot water closet and the air conditioner closet before installing the equipment and to redo the paint every year or so. Do regular checks for symptoms of mold and fungi growth and treat the symptoms immediately. There are millions of types of fungi that live in wood, plants, animal waste, and decayed plant remains. Prune those plants and trees and discard the remains. Molds can be toxic and can grow either in light or darkness. Mold spores are a durable fungi that resist the usual disinfectants. When the conditions are right, fungi that has lain dormant for a long time will germinate and form new cells that spread quickly.
