Last night we went and saw the box-office phenomen which is Avatar. The Avatar 3D version is booked solid for days in my town which only has one movie theatre showing it in 3D. With the general consensus that director James Cameron didn’t spend much of his budget on the script – it seemed only right to go for the maximum special effect experience.
Maybe it was just me – I like SF movie and big action special effects – but Avatar 3D did absolutely nothing for me – not even a little bit. In fact I got bored about half way in and started noticing the claring plot holes (check for Jake not quite getting from one body to the another in a consistent manner…).
The much hyped 3D was a big disapointment. The dolby count down at the very start jumped out – and the letters AVATAR at the end – and couple of dandeliion-type things at one point – but that was it as far I saw. There were some nice fight scenes and particularly the dragon flying – but no 3D ? Most of the time it just seemed to be filmed with a tight focus on one character or foreground element and the rest of the scene slightly in soft focus – effective – but not 3D the last time I checked!
I personally found the under-played special effects in Sherlock Holmes much more impressive.
